Daisy Darker

Daisy Darker was born with a broken heart. Now after years of avoiding each other, Daisy Darker’s entire family is assembling for Nana’s 80th birthday party in her crumbling gothic house on a tiny tidal island. The family arrives, each of them harboring secrets. When the tide comes in, they will be cut off from the rest of the world for eight hours.

But at the stroke of midnight, as a storm rages, Nana is found dead. And an hour later, the next family member follows…

Trapped on an island where someone is killing them one by one, the Darkers must reckon with their present mystery as well as their past secrets, before the tide goes out and all is revealed. As seen on the TODAY show and picked by Book of the Month, Daisy Darker’s family secrets and Alice Feeney’s trademark shocking twists will keep readers riveted.

I learned a pretty valuable lesson by reading this book. If you don’t enjoy the first book by an author, it’s always worth giving them one more shot before you write them off. A couple of months ago, my introduction to Alice Feeney was Beautiful Ugly. I had heard such great things about this author, and the fact that I had been on the waiting list for months for that particular book, I went into it with pretty high expectations. Maybe that had something to do with my disappointment, but….I borderline hated that book! Like, I had a bit of a visceral anger towards the author by the end of the book lol. So I was definitely skeptical when I went into this book.

I am happy to say, though, that this book definitely redeemed Feeney in my eyes! It was really good!! It was as if Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None and M. Night Shyamalan’s The Sixth Sense had a baby. That’s a bit of a spoiler, I’m afraid, because if you’ve ever seen M. Night Shyamalan’s movie, then you kind of know what the twist is in this book. If you don’t like supernatural twists in your thrillers, then you will probably be less impressed than I was, but I loved it!

Many years ago, a psychic predicted that the matriarch of the Darker family, Nana, would die on her 80th birthday. She plans a large family gathering at her secluded island home for the celebration, and the entire family flocks to the festivities. Not to enjoy the celebration because they love Nana, but because they all want to know who will be the lucky one to walk away with Nana’s fortune once she passes away. As Nana’s 80 clocks chime, announcing the midnight hour, she’s found dead. Assuming it was an accident, the family notices an eerie poem written in chalk on the wall, revealing all of the Darker family’s flaws, as well as one of their old home video tapes with a note saying “Watch Me”. Stranded on the island for the next 6 hours until low tide rolls in, the family begins dropping one by one. Who’s hunting them, and how will they survive the night?
