Darkly Dreaming Dexter

Meet Dexter Morgan, a polite wolf in sheep’s clothing. He’s handsome and charming, but something in his past has made him abide by a different set of rules. He’s a serial killer whose one golden rule makes him immensely likeable: he only kills bad people.

And his job as a blood splatter expert for the Miami police department puts him in the perfect position to identify his victims. But when a series of brutal murders bearing a striking similarity to his own style start turning up, Dexter is caught between being flattered and being frightened–of himself or some other fiend.

Here’s a little blast from the past! I was looking for my next audiobook, and scrolling through the options on Kindle Unlimited, I noticed this one was available with the audiobook version. The Showtime series, Dexter, is one of my all-time favorite shows. I remember I was already a couple of seasons into the show when I first learned that the show was based on a book series. I’m huge about reading books before watching the movie or show. But at that point, I was already pretty deep into the show and didn’t want the books to be ruined for me, so I just watched the show. Now that it’s been over 10 years since the last original series of Dexter came out, and a couple of years since the Resurrection season, I thought it’d be fun to get reacquainted with one of my favorite serial killers.

I won’t go into much detail about the book, because by now, who doesn’t know about Dexter, am I right? I was pleasantly surprised to find that the show actually did follow very closely to the book. There were a few small changes here and there, which I can understand why they made, for the plot of the show to flow smoothly. I’ve read that the show follows the first book very closely, but after that, it veers off quite a lot. I definitely understand why the book series sparked interest for a show, though. It’s a very original concept. A serial killer who has a code and only kills other menaces to society. I had a hard time not picturing Michael C. Hall as Dexter while listening to the book. I never knew Michael C. Hall until Dexter, so for me…he will always be Dexter. lol
