Crossroads

A sweeping small-town romance about love, loss, and a Montana legacy from USA Today bestselling author Devney Perry.

I met West Haven when I was eight years old. He taught me to play poker when I was nine, and we made paper airplanes together when I was eleven. He kissed me when I was sixteen. He was the best part about my family’s summer vacations to Montana. He was the boy who stole my heart. I was twenty-three when life ripped us apart.

Years later, I’m breaking my vow and returning to the ranch, not as a guest but its new owner. West might want me gone, but even he has to admit the only way to save his family’s legacy is with my help.

It’s not easy working side by side and facing those old memories. But this situation is only temporary. We’re at a crossroads. And as long as I don’t let myself fall in love with West Haven again, maybe this is our chance to put those ghosts to rest. Maybe this time we’ll finally be able to say goodbye.

Whoa wee! I had to fan myself a few times while listening to this audiobook! lol A little bit of a funny story…I typically listen to my audiobooks when I’m showering, getting ready for work, driving, or doing some coloring therapy. I was listening to this while I was getting ready for work one day, so I had it on a loudspeaker, when my mother walked in to talk to me. Sometimes she just has a quick question and quickly leaves, but this time she wanted to have a full-on discussion about something. It was right in the middle of an incredibly delicious, spicy scene, and I was quickly trying to get to my phone to hit pause when she finally heard some of what was being said. She looked pretty shocked at me and said, “Why are you listening to something like that?!” I busted out laughing and said, “Because…I’m a grown ass adult and I can listen to whatever I want, mother!” Yeah, I was a little embarrassed to say the least, but seriously! Who pays the bills here? I can listen to what I want, when I want. Period! haha

Even though this romance is spicy, it isn’t smutty and definitely not erotica. At the heart of the book it’s a very sweet romance that spans from childhood to adulthood. A sweet, unrequited love story of two young children who grow up together during brief summer vacations, both terrified of taking the leap and letting the other know exactly how they feel. The story is told in the present and the past. In some chapters, you get a glimpse into how their relationship developed over the years, while in other chapters, you see where they are now, struggling to figure out their feelings. I really enjoyed how the story unfolded in this manner.

The tropes in this book are enemies-to-lovers, but also young adult to adult romance, and unrequited love. All my favorites!! I think probably because I have my own pining for a young love that I fantasized would one day have a happy ending. Oh well! I can just live vicariously through characters in a book, I guess. I fell in love with the FMC and MMC, Indya and West. My heart melted, though once I reached the end of the book and the twist about Indya’s father is revealed (confirmed, because I already had my suspicions), and you learn the real reason why she bought the ranch. She was such an amazing character with such a huge heart. I adored her. I was just frustrated at times by the fact that they didn’t stay in contact for the rest of the year in between vacations! Like…seriously?! You couldn’t have exchanged phone numbers, addresses, or found each other on social media?! Something!!

I totally get why this book has such high reviews and has been so highly recommended. Once this book was finished, I immediately downloaded the next in the series and in 24 hours have already almost finished it while doing some coloring therapy. I’m enjoying it, but not nearly as much as I enjoyed Crossroads. Perhaps because I just like the tropes in Crossroads better than the next in the series. Who knows! I’ve never considered myself as someone into “western romances,” but if they’re like this one, then sign me up! I just might have a thing for cowboy ranchers now! lol
