She can’t ignore a cry for help. But in this remote hunting town, it’s open season.
Gwen Proctor escaped her serial-killer husband and saved her family. What she can’t seem to outrun is his notoriety. Or the sick internet vigilantes still seeking to avenge his crimes. For Gwen, hiding isn’t an option. Not when her only mission is to create a normal life for her kids.
But now, a threatened woman has reached out. Marlene Crockett, from the remote town of Wolfhunter, is panicked for herself and her daughter. When Gwen arrives in the small, isolated rural community, Marlene is already dead – her own daughter blamed for the murder. Except that’s not the person Marlene feared at all. And Gwen isn’t leaving until she finds out who that was.
But it may already be too late. A trap has been set. And it’s poised to snap shut on everyone Gwen loves. Her stalkers are closing in. And in a town as dark as Wolfhunter, it’s so easy for them to hide….

This review is going to be pretty short and sweet. I hope you guys don’t mind. But it’s been a rough week. It’s only been three days since I finished Wolfhunter River, and I’m struggling to remember some of the details. I’ve been having some health issues, and my elderly mother, who lives with me, has as well. I spent all day Saturday at the ER with her. On top of that, work has been a bit rough. As the charge nurse, I don’t usually take the busiest kiddos on the unit, but when I do….it kicks my ass!!! I’m definitely no spring chicken anymore.
In this third book to the Stillhouse Lake series by Rachel Caine, Gwen and her family are still living under the shadow of her ex-husband’s depravities. Because of everything that Gwen has been through, she’s kind of become a vigilante savior for some, and a pariah whom others want to see punished. This book also picks up shortly after book 2 ends, with Sam now living with Gwen and the kids. When Gwen gets a mysterious phone call from a woman in a backwoods little town called Wolfhunter River, she initially dismisses the call because the woman won’t give her any details. All she will tell Gwen is that she has to come to her. Yeah, lady…not likely! If you only knew what Gwen has been through! But when the woman’s daughter calls Gwen a few days later, asking her for help, she tells Gwen that her mother has been killed. She’s looking at her dead body as they speak!
Gwen drags Sam and the kids off to the little town to see if they can help. And let me tell you! Wolfhunter River is not a town you want to visit or get stranded in. Have you ever seen The Hills Have Eyes? Well, that’s Wolfhunter River for ya. It’s a town full of corruption and just plain old weirdness. Women are missing, kids are being kidnapped, and the police department is a bunch of “good ol’ boys,” if you know what I mean. They don’t like strangers in their town, and there’s good reason too.
I’m laughing at the thought that you only bring monsters into your bed. You deserve that.
The book has a prologue of a young girl being kidnapped from her school, and so you think that’s where the story is going to go. And it does. But it’s not the only plot. There is a pretty crazy twist to the story towards the end, and honestly…it came out of nowhere. It almost felt like two different stories coming together, and that’s where my brain gets foggy on the details. I remember the crazy twist, but I can not remember what the heck happened with the kidnapped girl, or the reason why she was kidnapped.
I will say that this book in the series was the most action-packed. It had its slow moments, but there was a lot of heart-stopping action all throughout the book, unlike the first two, when most of the action happens right at the end. It was intense and a pretty wild ride. I enjoyed that the narrators for the book were the same as the previous two. I’m kind of weird when it comes to that. I get used to a character’s voice, and when they change it up, it throws me off. Like when an actor who’s been playing a character on your favorite show gets recast. You can never get used to the new person. So that was nice. I’m really enjoying the family dynamics and seeing how each character is growing and developing. I’ve already started listening to book 4, and I’m really beginning to wonder if Gwen and her family will ever catch a break! Of course not!! Obviously…because why else would there still be 4 more books in the series, right? lol
Ok, there you have it, folks! Not as short and sweet as I thought it would be. But now it’s off to bed for me.
