This book was a wild ride, so buckle up, guys!! I initially started out really liking the wife, Reese. We seemed to have a bit in common, such as the inability to conceive, and just feeling a bit…bored with her marriage. Yep! Been there! Felt that!! I’m with you, girl. But very quickly, and I mean by chapter 5, she was getting on my last damn nerve, and it only got worse from there. I found her flat-out bitchy and constantly insecure for no reason. She’d have scenes where she would lash out at her husband, who, in my opinion, was bending over backwards to cater to her and make her happy. She references several times about being bored and feeling like her marriage was unraveling. However, I had a really hard time picturing that. Adam seemed to adore her, and she mentions how just his touch can make her melt. So honey…what’s the problem? That doesn’t sound like a failing marriage to me! Sure, you can get bored or feel like things need to be spiced up, but that in no way means your marriage is on the verge of dissolving. And because of that, I found her to be incredibly unlikable and unreliable as one of the narrators in the book.

The spicy scenes, though! Oooooh, they were spicing! Haha This is not the spicy book for the faint of heart, my friends!! I don’t want to ruin any of the scenes for you guys, because the naughty scenes were one of the best things in the book. But if you can’t handle anything but vanilla ice cream, then you won’t enjoy this book on your palate. All open-door, and I’ll be honest, the first half of the book had me re-looking up the genre because I kept thinking, “I swear I thought this book was listed as a thriller, not erotica.” Not that I mind erotica, but it’s like when you go to take a drink of something, expecting it to be Coke, but instead you find that it’s tea. It completely destroys your taste buds, and you think it tastes disgusting. IYKYK! I went in expecting some substance and plot, with some kind of thriller or mystery, and the first half was non-stop hot, steamy sex.

I was really getting annoyed by the mid-way point, because I didn’t want to read erotica. I wanted something to happen, and boy, did it! Owens finally brings in the big guns, and the plot gets very messy, insanely quickly. The plot twist and thriller portion of the book were awesome!!! It was a diabolical twist that I never saw coming, and that’s when I really got into the book. Looking back at my reading times during the book, the first few days of reading it would only hold my attention for about 20-30 minutes, and then I’d think, “That’s enough of that,” and put it away. I even struggled, wondering if I would finish the book or not. But the last day that I read, which was about the time I got to the twists, I read for a solid 3+ hours and finished it. I literally sat there with my mouth hanging open, and said “WTF!!! Did that seriously just happen?!” lol I LOVED IT!!!!!

Now, full transparency, I have to mention that I found several inconsistencies in the book. That doesn’t make or break a book for me, but it definitely shows poor editing, and I wonder how they didn’t get picked up and fixed. I’m fairly certain that had I been listening to an audiobook version, I wouldn’t have even noticed them. But I wasn’t so…I did. Here are some examples, and if you don’t want any spoilers at all, then skip this part:
⮞ When Adam and Reese first meet Joe at the restaurant, as they sit there and get to know each other, Joe asks them how they met, and they tell him the story of how they met. But then, a little later in the book, it’s mentioned that they have been hooking up and having sex together 3+ nights a week for the last month. It’s their 1-month anniversary since they met Joe, and they are celebrating with dinner at home together with him. Joe states that he feels like he only knows them on a surface level and wants to get to know them more deeply. When he’s asked, “Ok what do you want to know?” he says, “How did you guys meet?” Didn’t you guys already have this discussion on the first night? I’m confused.
⮞ During a sexy scene, Adam is noted to be slipping his fingers underneath Reese’s lace thong, teasing her while she’s kissing Joe. But just a few minutes later, Adam raises her dress and says, “You naughty girl,” when he realizes that she isn’t wearing any panties. So uh…what was your fingers slipping underneath just a few seconds ago? Was it not her panties?
⮞ Adam and Reese go back and forth many times over telling Joe that they are considering seeing other people, because he has grown “distant,” they feel. They do go on some dates with other men, and it’s pointed out how guilty Reese feels, as if they are cheating on Joe. Once Joe explains his distance, they feel awful, and Adam wants to still be honest about it, but Reese is afraid that Joe knowing they went on other dates might push him away, so she doesn’t want to tell him, and they agree not to. When the big twist finally happens, and you are getting Joe’s POV, he gets a frantic call from Reese, saying (this is a direct quote, pg. 157) “You know how we said we were seeing guys from the app again,” she whispers. My stomach twists when she reminds me of the revelation about her and Adam seeing other men.” When? When did you discuss this? Because the last we (the readers) heard, you were too afraid to tell him you guys were dating others!!!! Did I miss something?! Then jump ahead to both of them being abducted, and they’re talking to each other through the wall, and Reese says (this is a direct quote, pg. 167), “Adam and I never intended to hurt you or push you away, which is why we decided not to tell you about dating someone else. I can’t shake off the feeling that maybe we’re in this situation because we weren’t fully honest with you.”

So those are some of the inconsistencies that I found, which didn’t totally destroy the book for me, but I found them disconcerting. I get as a writer, during your writing process, your thoughts might shift, or a scene plays out differently than it started, and you go back and rewrite something to make it fit better. And that’s how these little discrepancies felt, but I feel like that should have been picked up by an editor and fixed. Hell, when I do my reviews, I write notes and summaries of every chapter so I can remember everything when I come back to write my review, so I noticed them. Maybe Wendy Owens should hire me as her editor? lol But because of them, and how I felt like the first half of the book was maybe a ⭐⭐, and the last half a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, I had to round it out to just 3 stars. Would I recommend the book? Definitely! I even look forward to reading other books by Owens as well.
